         PANAMA: A FAMILY ADVENTURE
PANAMA: A FAMILY ADVENTURE ITINERARY:

Ages 6 and Up

Day 1 Depart U.S. / Arrive Panama City  - Arrive and Settle In
Our representative meets you at the airport for transfer to your hotel.

Days 2-3 Chiriqui Highlands - Hiking in Baru Volcano National Park
River Rafting
Fly west into David, provincial capital of Chiriqui, then set out to explore the cool, misty cloud forest reserve at Baru Volcano National Park. Calling all bird-watchers: This is the home of the elusive resplendent quetzal — can you spot one?

The Esti River tumbles through a forest of ancient ferns and beautiful orchids, past hidden waterfalls and trees where monkeys and sloths keep watch. Its class II and III rapids are just right for family rafting, and water fights are practically mandatory! B, L, D

Days 4-5 Bocas del Toro - Bastimentos Marine National Park, Snorkeling, Pen Pals, Wildlife
Next stop, laid-back Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean coast and some of the best snorkeling around. Dine on coconut, passion fruit and the freshest of fish, and check out the town's colorful shops and restaurants. Meet your local pen pals for games and fun. Bocas is all about relaxing - there are hammocks everywhere, even in restaurants - but that doesn't mean there is nothing to do.

Bastimentos Marine National Park has some of the Caribbean's most spectacular coral reefs, a living pageant of marine life in every color, shape and size. Especially cool: giant starfish. Not all the wildlife is under water. You might see monkeys, slow-moving sloths, croc-like caiman and tropical birds of all kinds on coastal islands, or ants carrying leaves ten times their size marching along the forest floor. Watch for tiny red poison dart frogs clinging to trees (not to worry, they're only poisonous if you eat them). B, L, D

Days 6-8 Panama Canal - Miraflores Locks, Boating, Visit with the Embera People, Wildlife
There's something soul-stirring about seeing the Panama Canal for the first time. The enormity of the undertaking boggles the mind when you see firsthand the vast jungle the canal dissects, the massive locks and the sheer size and number of ships that make their way through here.

History books can supply the amazing facts about this monumental achievement, but the canal itself brings its story palpably and eloquently to life in a way no book can match — and in a way your kids will never forget. In Panama, history is one cool adventure.

Based at the luxurious Gamboa Rainforest Resort in the heart of the Soberania National Park, you'll venture out each day to explore different aspects of the canal and its surrounding environment. Highlights include the Miraflores Locks and interpretive canal exhibit, Gatun Lake – once the largest manmade lake in the world – and boating near humongous passenger and cargo ships.

You'll also ride in traditional dugout piraguas along the Chagres River to meet with the indigenous Embera people. And, of course, there's always more wildlife to spot — iguana, crocodile and osprey. On your final night in this beautiful country, enjoy a farewell dinner with your new friends. B, L, D

Day 9 Panama City / Return Home

This morning, you’ll be transferred to the airport, where you’ll connect to your flight home. B

As our world gets smaller and more interconnected, there's one problem in particular that faces the travel industry: where on earth to take people to next! Especially a travel company that specializes in adventures that are fun and informative for all ages—from kids to adults.

That's why I'm especially delighted that Thomson Family Adventures has created a wonderful new adventure to one of the last undiscovered destinations available today: Panama. Known for its famous canal—one of the great engineering marvels of all time—Panama offers a look at how human technology can work in harmony with the mysteries of nature.

Even more than that, though, Panama offers a wealth of possibilities for active families: a largely untouristed system of natural parks, an abundance of plants and wildlife to rival neighboring Costa Rica, easy access to both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts and a welcoming indigenous people, the Emberá who live a traditional lifestyle alongside the canal. Not only that, but Panama is just a short plane ride away from the U.S.!
