BELIZE:  RAIN FORESTS, RUINS & REEFS
BELIZE - RAIN FORESTS, RUINS & REEFS ITINERARY:

Ages 6 and Up

Day 1 Depart U.S. / Arrive Mountain Pine Ridge
Arrive in Belize City and journey westward into the Cayo District. We arrive at our beautiful and tranquil lodge in the Mountain Pine Ridge region. Get acquainted with your fellow travelers over a welcome dinner. D

Days 2-4 Mountain Pine Ridge, Cayo District
Head deep into the Chiquibul Forest where our destination is Caracol, a 30-square-mile complex that is the most extensive Mayan center in the country. Founded perhaps as early as 1200 B.C., Caracol may once have housed 180,000 people at its peak in 700 A.D. Explore plazas, ball courts, and more at this fascinating site where excavation is still ongoing.

After lunch we drive back towards our lodge, stopping at the Rio Frio Cave, which features 65-foot arched entryways, and finishing at the Rio On Pools for a dip in the cooling waterfalls.

The next day we'll explore the Mayan underworld as we canoe among the stalagmites and stalactites of a river cave, viewing Mayan potteries and skeletons that can only be observed by flashlight. Later, we head to San Ignacio, where you may spend time walking, shopping, and absorbing the culture in this bustling Belizean town. Here your children will have the opportunity to meet their Belizean pen pals. Included is a visit to the Green Iguana Conservation Project.

You'll also have a free day to visit the magnificent Mayan ruins of Tikal in Guatemala. visit the smaller and closer ruins of Xunantunich, or simply relax in one of the most beautiful spots in Belize. B, L, D

Days 5-8 Belize Reef and Beaches
Journey to the coast along Humming Bird Highway. We'll stop en route to explore a river cave via inner tube. Admire the unique and intricate limestone formations and gaze at the "crystal cathedral" of the Maya. Listen for the sounds of waterfalls that you cannot see. We return to the surface and continue on to our beachfront resort.

Snorkel or dive along the Southern Barrier Reef. At 185 miles long, it is second in size only to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Here, your children might see some 250 species of magnificent tropical fish in their natural habitat, along with eagle rays, moray eels, dolphins, turtles and barracuda.

A free day of leisure is planned so that you may enjoy the activities and amenities of the resort.

Head out again to the Southern Barrier Reef for another look at this spectacular eco-system. Snorkel or dive (own expense) as you explore this unique underwater world. The remainder of the day you are free to venture into the mangrove cayes or simply unwind on Belize’s white-sand beaches. In the evening, say goodbye over a farewell dinner.
B, L, D

Day 9 Return Home
Take a short flight to Belize City this morning, where you'll connect to your flight home. B

A Central American gem tucked between Mexico and Guatemala and bounded to the east by the Caribbean Sea. While Belize is a world apart, it is also close to home, just a 2-1/2 hour flight from Miami.

Your adventure begins high in the mountains where the lush, unspoiled beauty of the forest is highlighted by the colorful sights and sounds of exotic birds. Hiking, swimming and horseback riding are outstanding in the rain forests of Belize, but exploration of the fascinating Maya culture makes your trip truly exceptional.

View ancient Maya artifacts on an exciting canoe trip into a cave; visit the newly discovered ruins of Caracol; or choose to visit the massive ruins of Tikal, in nearby Guatemala. Tikal is the only place in the world that has been declared both a Natural and Cultural Heritage for Humanity.

Conclude your adventure on Belize's beautiful Caribbean coast. Relax on the white-sand beaches, venture into the mangrove cayes and admire the jungle. Or explore the Southern Barrier Reef - the longest reef in the Western Hemisphere! Swimming, snorkeling and kayaking will keep you active. Wildlife, including over 250 species of tropical fish, is magical.
