                        HIDDEN RUSSIA
HIDDEN RUSSIA ITINERARY:

Days 1 through 4: Moscow
Today, Moscow still fascinates. Parts of that old Moscow still exist, most famously in Red Square itself, with the landmark St Basil's Cathedral. Then there is the very new oil-rich Moscow, of designer shops and men in black.

We will tour Red Square and the Kremlin where we will have an exclusive tour of the Grand Kremlin Palace and Terem. We will visit the Tretyakov Gallery, shop at Izmailovsky Park, and enjoy an exciting performance of the Moscow Circus.

Meals: Breakfast daily, 1 Lunch, 2 Dinners

Days 5 and 6: the Golden Ring
Our tour of the most important centers of Russian Orthodoxy, the group of towns clustered around Moscow known collectively as the Golden Ring, is a trip back in time, not only in terms of the icons and architecture, which date back to the 12th century, but also for its insight into the role that the Church played in the lives of the tsars and the people. Suzdal, for example, where industry is forbidden, is still very much as it was in the 19th century.

We will tour the small town of Vladimir before arriving in Suzdal and our traditional Russian dinner in a private home. In Suzdal we will see the finest examples of original wooden architecture in provincial Russian style.

Meals: Breakfast daily, 2 Lunches, 2 Dinners

Days 7 through 11: St. Petersburg
During our stay in Peter the Great’s “Venice of the North,” we will travel outside the city to the village of Tsarskoe Selo where we will tour Catherine’s opulent, azure-colored palace and its fabled Amber Room, as well as the nearby Pavlovsk Palace. We will witness a thrilling performance at the famous Mariinsky Theatre, tour the Grand Palace of Peterhof, and explore the treasures hidden in the Hermitage’s off-limits storage rooms as well as the Hermitage itself.

Meals: Breakfast daily, 2 Lunches, 2 Dinner

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Exclusive Tour of the closed-to-the-public Grand Kremlin Palace and Terem
  • Visit to the Amber Room Workshops at Catherine Palace
  • Evening cruise along the Neva River
  • Backstage tour and performance at the famous Mariinsky (Kirov) Theater

Richard Chancellor was the first Englishman to visit Russia, during the reign of Ivan the IV – better known as Ivan the Terrible. Ivan entertained his guest to lavish dinners on gold plate, and gave him presents of furs and jewelry. Chancellor went sightseeing and saw that Moscow was a much bigger city than London, yet he described it also as "a rude and barbarous kingdom."

We think you’ll find Russia to be an infinitely more refined country than the Russia Chancellor found in the 16th century, especially while exploring sights that ordinary travelers are not allowed to see on our Hidden Russia tour of Moscow, the Golden Ring, and St. Petersburg. This itinerary focuses on exploring Russia’s concealed treasures in an intimate and luxurious atmosphere. Our small groups, ranging in size from six to eighteen people, allow us to take our guests places that are closed to all be a select few. Unique to this itinerary is a visit to the enchanting villages of the Golden Ring, including the “Colonial Williamsburg” of Russia: Suzdal. One very special visit will be into the Grand Kremlin Palace and Terem located inside the Kremlin and not open to the general public. Our guests are among the few ever allowed to enter this ancient treasure, which has housed the very earliest tsars, including Ivan the Terrible. This is not an ordinary tour of Russia.
