universal cultural and/or natural value that have been chosen

MOROCCO
Medina of Marrakech
Inscribed: 1985
Founded in 1070 by the Almoravids, Marrakech remained a
political, economic and cultural center for a long period. Its
influence was felt throughout the western Muslim world, from
North Africa to Andalusia. It has several impressive monuments
dating from that period: the Koutoubia Mosque, the Kasbah, the
battlements, monumental doors, gardens, etc. Later architectural
jewels include the Bandiâ Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the
Saadian Tombs, several great residences and Place Djemaa el Fna,
a veritable open-air theatre.
EGYPT
Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis
Inscribed: 1979
Thebes, the city of the god Amon, was the capital of Egypt
during the period of the Middle and New Kingdoms. With the
temples and palaces at Karnak and Luxor, and the necropolises of
the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, Thebes
(now called Luxor) is a striking testimony to Egyptian
civilization at its height.
INDIA
Taj Mahal
Inscribed: 1983
An immense mausoleum of white marble, built in Agra between
1631 and 1648 by order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in
memory of his favourite wife, the Taj Mahal is the jewel of
Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired
masterpieces of the world's heritage.
JORDAN
Petra
Inscribed: 1985
Inhabited since prehistoric times, this Nabataean caravan
city was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and
Syria-Phoenicia. Petra, half-built, half-carved in the rock
within a ring of mountains and riddled with passages and gorges,
is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world,
where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic
architecture.
