WORLD HERITAGE SITES
UNESCO World Heritage Sites visited on History’s Lost Cities
2009
UNESCO World Heritage sites are places of extraordinary and
universal cultural and/or natural value that have been chosen
for special protection from damage and destruction. When a site
is selected by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee, it is
inscribed onto the official World Heritage Site List and
receives ongoing aid and technical support from the World
Heritage Fund.
JORDAN
Petra
Inscribed: 1985
Inhabited since prehistoric times, this Nabataean caravan
city was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and
Syria-Phoenicia. Petra, half-built, half-carved in the rock
within a ring of mountains and riddled with passages and gorges,
is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world,
where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic
architecture.
CAMBODIA
Angkor
Inscribed: 1992
Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in
Southeast Asia. Stretching over some 248 square miles, including
forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the
magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer
Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the
famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon
Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set
up a wide-ranging program to safeguard this symbolic site and
its surroundings.
LAOS
Town of Luang Prabang
Inscribed: 1995
Luang Prabang is an outstanding example of the fusion of
traditional architecture and Lao urban structures with those
built by the European colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th
centuries. Its unique, remarkably well-preserved townscape
illustrates a key stage in the blending of these two distinct
cultural traditions.
UZBEKISTAN
Samarqand -- Crossroads of Cultures
Inscribed: 2001
The historic town of Samarqand is a crossroads and melting
pot of the world's cultures. Founded in the 7th century B.C. as
ancient Afrasiab, Samarqand had its most significant development
in the Timurid period from the 14th to the 15th centuries. The
major monuments include the Registan Mosque and medressehs, Bibi
Khanum Mosque, the Shah-i-Zinda compound and the Gur Emir
ensemble, as well as Ulug Beg's Observatory.
ALBANIA
Butrint
Inscribed: 1992
Inhabited since prehistoric times, Butrint has been the site
of a Greek colony, a Roman city and a bishopric. Following a
period of prosperity under Byzantine administration, then a
brief occupation by the Venetians, the city was abandoned in the
late Middle Ages after marshes formed in the area. The present
archaeological site is a repository of ruins representing each
period in the city's development.
Museum-City of Gjirokastra
Inscribed: 2005
The old city of Gjirokastra is a rare testimony to a
long-lasting, and almost disappeared, society and lifestyle
influenced by the culture and tradition of Islam in the Ottoman
period. The historic town, in the Drinos river valley in
southern Albania, was built by farmers of large estate. The
13th-century citadel provides the focal point of the town with
its typical tower houses (Turkish kule). Characteristic of the
Balkan region, Gjirokastra contains a series of outstanding
examples of kule, a type of building which crystallized in the
17th century. But Gjirokastra also features some more elaborate
examples from the early 19th century. The kule has a tall
basement, a first floor for use in the cold season, and a second
floor for the warm season. Interiors feature rich decorative
details and painted floral patterns, particularly in the zones
reserved for the reception of visitors. The town also retains a
bazaar, an 18th-century mosque and two churches of the same
period.
