World Heritage Sites
UNESCO World Heritage Sites visited on Cape to Cape 2009
UNESCO World Heritage sites are places of extraordinary and
universal cultural and/or natural value that have been chosen
for special protection from damage and destruction. When a site
is selected by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee, it is
inscribed onto the official World Heritage Site List and
receives ongoing aid and technical support from the World
Heritage Fund.
PORTUGAL
Laurisilva of Madeira
Inscribed: 1999
The Laurisilva of Madeira is an outstanding relict of a
previously widespread laurel forest type. It is the largest
surviving area of laurel forest and is believed to be 90%
primary forest. It contains a unique suite of plants and
animals, including many endemic species such as the Madeiran
long-toed pigeon.
SOUTH AFRICA
Cape Floral Region Protected Areas
Inscribed: 2004
This serial site in Cape Province, South Africa is made up of
eight protected areas, covering 1.365 million acres. The Cape
Floral Region is one of the richest areas for plants in the
world. It represents less than 0.5% of the area of Africa but is
home to nearly 20% of the continent’s flora. The site displays
outstanding ecological and biological processes associated with
the Fynbos vegetation, which is unique to the Cape Floral
Region. The outstanding diversity, density and endemism of the
flora are among the highest worldwide.
Robben Island
Inscribed: 1999
Robben Island was used at various times between the 17th and
20th centuries as a prison, a hospital for socially unacceptable
groups and a military base. Its buildings, particularly those of
the late 20th century such as the maximum security prison for
political prisoners, bear eloquent testimony to its somber
history. Robben Island and its prison buildings symbolize the
triumph of democracy and freedom over oppression and racism.
ARGENTINA
Iguazu National Park
Inscribed: 1984
The semicircular waterfall at the heart of this site is some 80
m high and 2,700 m in diameter and is situated on a basaltic
line spanning the border between Argentina and Brazil. Made up
of many cascades producing vast sprays of water, it is one of
the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. The surrounding
subtropical rainforest has over 2,000 species of vascular plants
and is home to the typical wildlife of the region: tapirs, giant
anteaters, howler monkeys, ocelots, jaguars and caymans.
PANAMA
Archaeological Site of Panamá Viejo and Historic District of
Panamá
Inscribed: 1997
Founded in 1519 by the conquistador Pedrarías Dávila, Panamá
Viejo is the oldest European settlement on the Pacific coast of
the Americas. It was laid out on a rectilinear grid and marks
the transference from Europe of the idea of a planned town.
Abandoned in the mid-17th century, it was replaced by a ‘new
town’ (the ‘Historic District’), which has also preserved its
original street plan, its architecture and an unusual mixture of
Spanish, French and early American styles. The Salón Bolívar was
the venue for the unsuccessful attempt made by El Libertador in
1826 to establish a multinational continental congress.
