UNESCO World Heritage Sites visited on Around the World
Wonders 2009
UNESCO World Heritage sites are places of extraordinary and
universal cultural and/or natural value that have been chosen
for special protection from damage and destruction. When a site
is selected by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee, it is
inscribed onto the official World Heritage Site List and
receives ongoing aid and technical support from the World
Heritage Fund.
GUATEMALA
Tikal National Park
Inscribed: 1979
In the heart of the jungle, surrounded by lush vegetation,
lies one of the major sites of Maya civilization, inhabited from
the 6th century B.C. to the 10th century AD The ceremonial
center contains superb temples and palaces, and public squares
accessed by means of ramps. Remains of dwellings are scattered
throughout the surrounding countryside.
CHILE
Rapa Nui National Park
Inscribed: 1995
Rapa Nui, the indigenous name of Easter Island, bears
witness to a unique cultural phenomenon. A society of Polynesian
origin that settled there circa AD 300 established a powerful,
imaginative, original tradition of monumental sculpture and
architecture, free from any external influence. From the 10th to
the 16th century, this society built shrines and erected
enormous stone figures known as moai, which created an
unrivalled cultural landscape that continues to fascinate people
throughout the world.
AUSTRALIA
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park
Inscribed: 1987, 1994
This park, formerly called Uluru (Ayers Rock-Mount Olga)
National Park, features spectacular geological formations that
dominate the vast red sandy plain of central Australia. Uluru,
an immense monolith, and Kata Tjuta, the rock domes located west
of Uluru, form part of the traditional belief system of one of
the oldest human societies in the world. The traditional owners
of Uluru-Kata Tjuta are the Anangu Aboriginal people.
CHINA
Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor (near Xi'an)
Inscribed: 1987
No doubt thousands of statues still remain to be unearthed
at this archaeological site, which was not discovered until
1974. Qin (d. 210 B.C.), the first unifier of China, is buried,
surrounded by the famous terracotta warriors, at the center of a
complex designed to mirror the urban plan of the capital,
Xianyan. The small figures are all different; with their horses,
chariots and weapons, they are masterpieces of realism and also
of great historical interest.
JORDAN
Petra
Inscribed: 1985
Inhabited since prehistoric times, this Nabataean caravan
city was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and
Syria-Phoenicia. Petra, half-built, half-carved in the rock
within a ring of mountains and riddled with passages and gorges,
is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world,
where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic
architecture.
EGYPT
Islamic Cairo
Inscribed: 1979
Tucked away amid the modern urban area of Cairo lies one of
the world's oldest Islamic cities, with its famous mosques,
madrasas, hammams and fountains. Founded in the 10th century, it
became the new center of the Islamic world, reaching its golden
age in the 14th century.
Memphis and its Necropolis - the Pyramid Fields from Gîza to
Dahshur
Inscribed: 1979
The capital of the Old Kingdom of Egypt has some
extraordinary funerary monuments, including rock tombs, ornate
mastabas, temples and pyramids. In ancient times, the site was
considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
TURKEY
Historic Areas of Istanbul
Inscribed: 1985
With its strategic location on the Bosporus peninsula
between the Balkans and Anatolia, the Black Sea and the
Mediterranean, Istanbul has been associated with major
political, religious and artistic events for more than 2,000
years. Its masterpieces include the ancient Hippodrome of
Constantine, the sixth-century Hagia Sophia and the 16th-century
Süleymaniye Mosque, all now under threat from population
pressure, industrial pollution and uncontrolled urbanization.
