We consider this a fast-paced, strenuous program. Walking and

WORLD HERITAGE SITES |
UNESCO World Heritage Sites visited on Around the World in
Cooperation with World Wildlife Fund 2009
UNESCO World Heritage sites are places of extraordinary and
universal cultural and/or natural value that have been chosen
for special protection from damage and destruction. When a site
is selected by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee, it is
inscribed onto the official World Heritage Site List and
receives ongoing aid and technical support from the World
Heritage Fund.
BRAZIL
Central Amazon Conservation Complex
Inscribed: 2000
The Central Amazon Conservation Complex makes up the largest
protected area in the Amazon Basin (over 6 million hectares) and
is one of the planet’s richest regions in terms of biodiversity.
It also includes an important sample of varzea ecosystems, igapó
forests, lakes and channels which take the form of a constantly
evolving aquatic mosaic that is home to the largest array of
electric fish in the world. The site protects key threatened
species, including giant arapaima fish, the Amazonian manatee,
the black caiman, and two species of river dolphin.
CHILE
Rapa Nui National Park
Inscribed: 1995
Rapa Nui, the indigenous name of Easter Island, bears witness to
a unique cultural phenomenon. A society of Polynesian origin
that settled there circa AD 300 established a powerful,
imaginative, original tradition of monumental sculpture and
architecture, free from any external influence. From the 10th to
the 16th century, this society built shrines and erected
enormous stone figures known as moai, which created an
unrivalled cultural landscape that continues to fascinate people
throughout the world.
LAOS
Town of Luang Prabang
Inscribed: 1995
Luang Prabang is an outstanding example of the fusion of
traditional architecture and Lao urban structures with those
built by the European colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th
centuries. Its unique, remarkably well-preserved townscape
illustrates a key stage in the blending of these two distinct
cultural traditions.
NEPAL
Kathmandu Valley
Inscribed: 1979
At the crossroads of the great civilizations of Asia, seven
groups of Hindu and Buddhist monuments, as well as the three
residential and palace areas of the royal cities of Kathmandu,
Patan and Bhadgaon, illustrate Nepalese art at its height. Among
the 130 monuments are pilgrimage centers, temples, shrines,
bathing sites and gardens – all sites of veneration for both
religious groups.
Royal Chitwan National Park
Inscribed: 1984
At the foot of the Himalayas, Chitwan is one of the few
remaining undisturbed vestiges of the "Terai" region, which
formerly extended over the foothills of India and Nepal. It has
a particularly rich flora and fauna. One of the last populations
of single-horned Asiatic rhinoceros lives in the park, which is
also one of the last refuges of the Bengal tiger.
MADAGASCAR
Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve
Inscribed: 1990
Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve comprises karstic
landscapes and limestone uplands cut into impressive 'tsingy'
peaks and a 'forest' of limestone needles, the spectacular
canyon of the Manambolo river, rolling hills and high peaks. The
undisturbed forests, lakes and mangrove swamps are the habitat
for rare and endangered lemurs and birds.
UGANDA
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Inscribed: 1994
Located in southwestern Uganda, at the junction of the plain
and mountain forests, Bwindi Park covers 79,000 acres and is
known for its exceptional biodiversity, with more than 160
species of trees and over 100 species of ferns. Many types of
birds and butterflies can also be found there, as well as many
endangered species, including the mountain gorilla.
