When the famous haiku artist Basho stated his wish to “be one with nature, throughout the four seasons of the year” he was gazing upon the sublime beauty of Japan’s Tohoku region, our destination for this magical trip. You’ll follow in the poet’s footsteps, peering through the mists of the Oze marshlands and climbing Mount Kumano-dake, where the lake formed by the Okama Crater changes colors depending on the weather. From Matsushima Bay, where 260 pine-covered islands dot the water to Magariya Village, where traditional Japanese style homes are preserved, this trip is a chance to see Japan at its least spoiled and most mysterious. Far from the legendary bustle of Tokyo, you’ll hike through whispering alpine forests and take cultural excursions to Shinto shrines and solemn fortresses. The combination of wilderness and history make this an unforgettable excursion into hidden Japan.
