TURQUOISE COAST BY SEA ITINERARY
Trip Length: 9 days/8 nights
Start/Finish: Istanbul/Goçek
When Herodotus, the “Father of History,” embarked on his epic
travels from Bodrum, chances are he wasn’t this comfortable.
Aboard our traditional teak gulets, we cruise the dazzling
Aegean and historic coastline in style. Our itinerary includes
the greatest hits of antiquity: remains of the Greek, Roman,
Byzantine and Ottoman empires. But here, excavation is the
exception and nature rules: we walk along old Roman roads
littered with ruins, and find the ancient city of Bybasso
populated by wandering herds of goats. Ambling through olive
groves and almond orchards, we encounter isolated communities
where fishing, sponge-diving and boat-building are still the
main industries. Best of all, our elegant vessels slip quietly
into spectacular bays impossible to detect from the sea –
allowing us to hike from one uninhabited bay to the next.
Stumbling upon ruins, dining in local tavernas, and sipping
sundowners on deck, we think it’s the only way to experience the
Turquoise Coast. Trip
Highlights:
- View remains Bodrum’s Mausoleum at Bodrum – one of the
Seven Wonders of the World
- Visit a traditional carpet-making community on the Datça
Peninsula
- Receive a vigorous body scrub and massage at a Turkish
hammam
- Dine on mouth-watering mezes, freshly grilled shrimp and
octopus, and kebabs cooked over open coals
- Go water-skiing or kayaking in the Gulf of Goçek

then explore the fertile plains and marshlands of Caunos
- Snorkel over sunken ruins

Turkey Pre-trip to Cappadocia
The Turquoise Coast is pure magic, but the region of
Cappadocia has its own ethereal beauty. Famed for the “fairy
chimneys” and suggestive spires of Love Valley, it is a place
unlike any other. After a morning of exploration in Istanbul, we
head to Gorëme for two nights in luxury cave accommodations.
During the days, we enjoy the views from a hot air balloon,
explore 700-year-old rock-cut churches on foot, and wander the
volcanic tufa rock that characterizes the Cappadocian landscape.
Leaving troglodytic living behind us, we continue on to ancient
Ephesus for a full day exploring the famous ruins before bedding
down in Bodrum. By our calculations, that gives you just enough
time for a Turkish bath and a good night’s sleep before our By
Sea adventures begin.
