LA RIOJA BIKING ITINERARY
Trip Length: 6 days/5 nights
Start/Finish: Bilbao/Bilbao
The ancient wine region of La Rioja, the smallest of Spain’s
regions, is really a range of hills that straddle the Ebro River
in north-central Spain. Like the rest of the country, La Rioja
is moving rapidly into the 21st century and to the forefront of
both haute cuisine and design. Our route criss-crosses the
river, traversing not only the up-and-down hill towns in wine
country but also some of the quiet valleys and farmland to the
south.
We’ll get going in the Basque Mountains, enjoying the vantage
points and easygoing riding the gentle farmland hills afford us.
We will coast through vineyards, stopping for tastings along the
way (of course!). Heading south we join up with the famous
Camino de Santiago, and meet pilgrims on the road to Santiago.
Our return to wine country sends us to the fantastic Gehry-designed
Marqués de Riscal hotel. Delicious.
Trip Highlights:
- Visit the state-of-the-art wine museum at Briones, a
modern wonder built by local architect Jesus Marina Pascual
- Ride to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a major stop along
the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route
- Experience the culinary feats of innovative chef Francis
Paniego, a fave of Sophisticated Traveller magazine
- Bike landscapes that range from mountain roads to tidy
vineyards and rolling farmlands
- Architectural buffs will love our last hotel, the Gehry-designed
Marqués de Riscal
