CATALONIA BIKING ITINERARY
Trip Length: 6 days/5 nights
Start/Finish: Barcelona/Barcelona
As a semi-autonomous region of Spain, Catalonia clearly has its
own sense of identity. The Renaissance of the regional culture –
a blend of French and Spanish influences – can be largely
credited to the movement toward reclaiming the regional dialect,
Catalan, which was outlawed under the dictatorship of Franco.
We are free to explore the Catalonian sense of identity – in the
food, wine, art and landscapes – as the Catalonians are eager to
share it with us. We’ll learn to make tapas, tour the Dalí
museum with a knowledgeable local guide, and of course, explore
the timeless villages of the Catalonian countryside. Trip
Highlights:
- Cycle from Meranges through the Cerdanya Valley to a
garden dinner of Catalan barbecue
- Cross the border into France for a café au lait, before
cruising downhill through Puigcerda, a typical Pyrénées town
- Enjoy an à la carte dinner at Torre del Remei, a Relais
& Châteaux property
- Bike through the quaint villages of the Alt and Baix
Empordà
- Tour the Dalí Theatre Museum with a local expert

Accommodations:
Torre del Remei, Bolvir
Relais & Châteaux
Sometimes our trip planners have to scour a region to find
the best hotels. Other times the answer is very obvious; Torre
del Remei in Catalonia is one such place. Built in 1910 as a
gift for the daughter of a wealthy Catalan family, this Relais &
Châteaux hotel has spacious rooms with private terraces,
beautiful gardens, an outdoor pool, a gym, and a very charming
owner, Señor Boix, who understands B&R to a tee and makes us
feel right at home. If only it were always this easy.
Mas Falgarona, Avinyonet de Puigventós
This serene hotel is located just outside of Figueres. Built in
the 15th century, it is now a stylish, contemporary hotel with
all modern amenities, yet it still retains its country charm
thanks to the surrounding farmland. Mas Falgarona is a labour of
love of owners Severino and Brigitta, and much of the hotel’s
photography is the work of their son.
Mas de Torrent, Torrent
Relais & Châteaux
Mas de Torrent, located in the heart of Empordà, is one of
Catalonia’s most beautiful hotels, and a very welcome sight at
the end of a long day on the trail. It was once an old Catalan
masia, a typical farmhouse, dating from the 18th century. Fully
restored and the pride of the locals, it now boasts a swimming
pool, tennis courts and massage service.
