NEWFOUNDLAND WALKING ITINERARY
Trip Length: 7 days/6 nights
Start/Finish: St. John's/St. John's
It’s been a thousand years since the Vikings first landed here,
and we’re guessing you’ll be as astonished by what you find in
Newfoundland as they were – a vast island both barren and
beautiful, rugged and romantic, astonishing in its isolation.
But thanks to float planes and charter flights, boats and buses,
we will explore the best of it, travelling from east to west to
north and back. We show you where those Vikings landed and hike
through the spectacular Tablelands; fly you to the tip of the
Great Northern Peninsula (where moose outnumber we humans) to
spend a night aside crashing waves and passing whales at The
Lighthouse; and spend three nights in pretty Trinity Bay, the
historic place where The Shipping News was filmed.
Trip Highlights:
- Take a scenic flight over Gros Morne National Park, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Enjoy a traditional “boil up” of fresh mussels picked by
you – plus dine on lobster, caribou and fresh cod
- Shove off in boats with local fishermen in search of
flirtatious minke whales
- Walk along coastal trails voted among the best in North
America, keeping your eyes peeled for eagles, whales and
porpoises
- Go kayaking with the whales – and a local guide – at
sunset

Accommodations:
Fairmont Newfoundland Hotel, St. John’s
Although the Fairmont Newfoundland Hotel is larger than our
typical B&R hotel, we have the intimate feeling of being in a
smaller property by staying on the Gold Floor. We also have
access to all of the hotel’s amenities (pool, spa, gym). The
rooms are the most modern in the city, and all offer a view,
either of the city or the water.
Strawberry Hill Resort, Little Rapids
Set on nine private hectares, the elegant Strawberry Hill Resort
is a perfect way to begin our stay in rural Newfoundland. Among
the long list of distinguished guests that have visited the
resort are former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Queen
Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and (rumour has it) Marilyn Monroe.
For the anglers in the group, our stay here offers a great
opportunity for salmon fishing as the resort overlooks the
Humber River, a world-famous salmon waterway.
The Lighthouse, Quirpon Island
There is literally nothing on the island but the inn, the
lighthouse and a few huts. The closest other man-made light
comes from the next lighthouse over, 70 km away on the tip of
Labrador. Otherwise, it is pitch black, and aside from the wind
and the waves, dead quiet. The National Geographic Traveller
says of the Quirpon Lighthouse: “I’d once paddled the entire
Inside Passage, from Alaska’s ice-choked Glacier Bay to Puget
Sound, but I’d never seen anything like this.” While we bunk in
smallish rooms and share a bathroom, it is worth it. Imagine
falling asleep to the pounding North Atlantic and waking up to
the sight of icebergs and whales passing by outside your window.
Fishers’ Loft, Port Rexton
On the Bonavista Peninsula, we are hosted by John and Peggy
Fisher at the appropriately named Fishers’ Loft. Located in Port
Rexton, Fishers’ Loft is a collection of buildings that have
been lovingly and carefully brought to life in the authentic
Newfoundland style. It is no surprise that this is the best
hotel in Newfoundland--your every need will be catered to, as we
enjoy impeccable and friendly service, as well as delicious
home-cooked meals with produce fresh from John and Peggy’s
garden.
