LA RUTA MAYA WALKING ITINERARY
Trip Length: 7 days/6 nights
Start/Finish: San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico/Antigua,
Guatemala
The Ruta Maya isn’t technically a “route” at all. Instead it
defines, roughly, the space once occupied by one of the greatest
civilizations on earth: a rich, ancient culture renowned for its
achievements in architecture, art and astronomy. It comprises
great tracts of pristine jungle, crumbling ruins, towering step
pyramids, exotic wildlife, and millions of modern-day Mayans. It
incorporates bits and pieces of four countries, but not all of
any – the Mayans were a selective bunch, and were not impacted
by international borders.
On this trip we take a page out of their book, venturing into
two countries to explore the highlights – natural,
architectural, and cultural – of la Ruta Maya. And travelling by
plane and helicopter, we will experience vistas the Maya could
only have dreamed of. From highlands to jungle ruins, and from
the great city-states of Palenque and Tikal to the vibrant
markets of Antigua, we journey through the world of the Maya –
and, not coincidentally, visit some of the most beautiful sites
in modern-day Mexico and Guatemala. Trip Highlights:
- Hike to the highland pueblo of San Juan Chamula on
market day
- Explore colonial architecture in San Cristóbal de las
Casas
- Wander through the tropical forest of Sierra de Chiapas
- Cruise by private boat across Lake Atitlán and explore
its indigenous villages
- Walk among the ruins of Tikal at sunrise to see and hear
the jungle come to life
- Climb all the way to the top of San Pedro Volcano
- Explore the textile markets and museums of Antigua,
Guatemala’s 17thC capital

Accommodations:
El Parador San Juan de Dios, San Cristóbal de las Casa
Nestled in one of San Cristóbal de las Casa’s oldest
neighbourhoods, this colonial-style hotel dates back to the 17th
century. Antique furnishings and fireplaces in each room add to
the warm and inviting décor.
Jungle Lodge Tikal
We have chosen this hotel for its location rather than its
amenities and service. It is the best in the region and affords
us the true experience of Tikal, at sunrise and sunset. The
rooms are clean but very basic. Our meals will be catered within
the surrounding park.
Casa Palopó, Lago Atitlán
This exquisite hotel has received much acclaim for its
spectacular views, heritage design and delicious local and
international cuisine. We have exclusive use of the hotel during
our stay.
Mesón Panza Verde, Antigua
This exquisite boutique hotel is conveniently situated a short
walk from Antigua’s main plaza and cathedral. A central
fountain, exotic flowers and remarkable view of all three
volcanoes from its roof top garden—this is what we call divino.
