PUGLIA BIKING ITINERARY
Trip Length: 7 days/6 nights
Start/Finish: Brindisi/Bari
Puglia, the heel of Italy, has been one of our most popular
destinations for years. Yet the region remains relatively
unknown to many, and the result is an authentic Italian
experience. And like all of our itineraries, our Puglia Biking
trip just gets better and better. We now pedal as far as Lecce,
the “Florence of the South,” and enjoy an exclusive stay at the
recently restored Masseria Montelauro in Otranto.
It’s not just for the great riding that people love Puglia –
it’s the quiet countryside dotted with trulli and olive groves,
the whitewashed coastline, and the rustic cuisine. Our guides
call it “Greece with great Italian food,” and it produces more
wine and olive oil than any other region in Italy. Intrigued?
You should be. Trip Highlights:
- Cycle along the coast past ancient stone villages,
prehistoric menhirs and Byzantine crypts
- Take a walking tour of Byzantine stronghold Otranto
- Learn how to make orecchiette from a local chef, and
then indulge in your creation
- Bike through olive groves to a local masseria for lunch
- Explore Alberobello, the “city of trulli,” with our
local guide

Accommodations:
Masseria Montelauro, Otranto
A lovely new hotel located just outside of Otranto, this
recently restored masseria incorporates styles from around the
Mediterranean. The main building is an old fortified farmhouse
that is largely original, while the furnishings are an appealing
blend of Moroccan and Italian. The hotel is family owned, and we
are bound to feel like guests in a southern Italian home, where
hospitality is paramount.
Patria Palace Hotel, Lecce
Situated in the heart of Lecce’s old town and shopping
district, this 18thC palace is part of the Sheraton Luxury
Collection. Many of its rooms feature a remarkable view of Santa
Croce, the most famous baroque church in the region.
Torre Maizza, Savelletri
The brand new Torre Maizza is an oasis among the olive
groves, with its 26 spacious rooms, tranquil pool and panoramic
rooftop bar. Aside from the splendid common areas of the main
masseria, an Aveda spa is available for those seeking extra
pampering, while in finer weather visits to its private beach
club are only a short shuttle away.
