BOLOGNA TO VENICE BIKING ITINERARY

One of the great injustices of Italian travel is the fact that
most people rush from Florence to Venice, skipping over some of
Northern Italy's most fascinating, well-preserved and charming
towns. So we set out to right a wrong, creating a bike journey
that links medieval Bologna with the wine country of Imola,
Ferrara and Ravenna, the ancient capital of the Western Roman
Empire.
From Ravenna's pedestrian- and cycle-only historic centre and
Ferrara, “The City of Bicycles,” to the Slow Food establishments
in Imola, these towns were seemingly built for the active
Butterfield & Robinson traveller. Trip Highlights:
- Tour the historic centre of Ravenna – once the capital
of both the western Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire –
with a local historian
- Glide downhill through the wine country of the Romagna
hills into Renaissance Imola
- Enjoy a pasta-making demo at a small agriturismo outside
Ferrara
- Cycle into Venice, then don traditional masks and set
off in gondolas to an incredible evening at a palazzo on the
banks of the Grand Canal

Once an ancient monastery, this hilltop retreat outside
Dozza now presides over the northern Italian countryside as a
modest-yet-comfortable four-star hotel. Its best feature: the
outdoor pool with infinite views toward the Alps.
Hotel Duchessa Isabella, Ferrara
Relais & Châteaux
This 16thC residence is located in the heart of Renaissance
Ferrara. Although designated a Relais & Châteaux property, in
our opinion the Duchessa Isabella falls short of R&C standards
of service. That said, it is the best hotel in the region, and
provides a comfortable home base in this superb city.

Small Luxury Hotels of the World
Londra Palace is one of Venice’s finest and most intimate
hotels. Of its 53 rooms, ours all have views of the waterborne
hustle and bustle of the Venetian harbour, while St. Mark’s
