PROVENCE WALKING ITINERARY
Trip Length: 6 days/5 nights
Start/Finish: Avignon/Avignon
We’ve now been walking through Provence for 36+ years. No, we’re
not lost – we just never get tired of hiking among perched
villages and colourful markets, touring the landscapes of van
Gogh with our friend and local guide Mathilde, and tasting one
Provençal specialty after another, all accompanied by Côtes du
Rhône wines.
It’s the balance we love – great countryside walks that lead to
medieval towns and cobbled streets bursting with history. It’s
the laid-back southern feel combined with the luxury of hotels
like La Bastide de Marie. It’s listening to vespers at the abbey
in Sénanque after hitting the shops and cafés in chic St-Rémy.
Trip Highlights:
- Walk into St-Rémy with Les Alpilles in the background
- Explore such famous Lubéron hill towns as Gordes and
Ménerbes
- Walk through vineyards and valleys to Lacoste, former
home of the Marquis de Sade
- Taste our bullfighting friend's wines at her domaine

Accommodations:
Le Hameau des Baux, Paradou
This traditional 18thC Provençal hamlet has been lovingly
restored by former Swiss soccer star Jean Claude Milani and his
wife. Designed with exquisite fabrics and country-style
furnishings in its spacious rooms, it is set on two hectares of
land and nestled at the foot of the Alpilles.
L’Hôtel Les Ateliers de l’Image, St-Rémy
Take a walk on St-Rémy’s contemporary side when you stay at
its most innovative property located in the heart of the
historic town. Recently placed on Condé Nast Traveler’s
exclusive hot list, L’Hôtel was created around a photography
theme and boasts its own projection hall and gallery. Sit by the
pool or stroll the labyrinthine gardens (perhaps with camera in
hand) and contemplate the refreshing contrast of the hotel’s hip
urban décor with its tranquil countryside surroundings.
La Bastide de Marie, Ménerbes
This beautifully restored, centuries-old “farmhouse” is set
among 37 acres of the inn’s own vineyards in the heart of the
Lubéron Valley. With two pools and terraces that run the length
of the house, you will be hard pressed to get up from your
lounge chair. Fortunately, the chef, Gérald Poltron, is on hand
to lure you to dinner with his acclaimed Provençal cooking.
