LOIRE CHATEAUX BIKING ITINERARY
Trip Length: 7 days/6 nights
Start/Finish: Montbazon/Angers
It’s long been the playground of kings and queens, the small
country roads are perfect for biking, and the food and wine are
superb. So what makes B&R’s trip in the Loire Valley so special?
Well for one thing, we stay at some of the Loire’s best
châteaux, where we’re made to feel right at home. Best of all,
one of our properties, the Château du Rivau, isn’t really even a
hotel. The 13thC castle hosted Joan of Arc and, a little more
recently, underwent a 12-year restoration. It’s a private
residence to rival the great châteaux of the region – and the
doors open for us alone. Why? Because the gracious owners are
friends, and wanted to share their love of Rivau with B&R
travelers. Talk about making us feel like royalty.
Trip Highlights:
- Bike among the fabled châteaux and troglodyte villages
that dot the Loire landscape
- Stop in at La Blanchière, the newly restored home of our
own Karen Normandy, and have lunch in the shade of her wine
house
- Cycle along the banks of the River Vienne through the
Chinon vineyards
- Tour the 12 gardens of Rivau before a private cooking
demonstration in the castle
- Be initiated into the Bon Entonneurs Rablaisiens, the
revered local wine brotherhood
- Explore medieval Chinon – and taste its finest vintages
- Follow in the footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine and
Richard the Lion-Heart on our visit to the Royal Abbey of
Fontévraud

Accommodations:
Château de Brou, Noyant-de-Touraine
We not only feel welcomed at the intimate Château de Brou,
but very special when we’re there--especially since this
immaculately restored 15thC castle seems straight out of a fairy
tale. The château offers views over a private park and the
Vallée de Courtineau.
Château du Rivau, Lémeré
Located in the heart of the Touraine region known as the
“Garden of France,” this château isn’t actually a hotel at
all--it’s a private home whose owners have graciously welcomed
B&R as guests. Their 12-year restoration campaign has returned
the historical monument to its former glory, and its 12
whimsical gardens complete the fairy-tale setting. By staying
here, you join very illustrious company; Joan of Arc was a guest
in the 15th century.
Château de Verrières, Saumur
This elegant 19thC residence, which opened as a hotel in
2003, is run by Thierry and Yolaine de Valbray-Auger. We are
sure to feel at home here, as we are the only guests during our
stay. Conveniently situated in the historic centre of Saumur,
Verrières is a private mansion boasting its own gardens and
swimming pool, and large, airy bedrooms with luxurious
bathrooms.
