DORDOGNE VALLEY BIKING ITINERARY
Trip Length: 7 days/6 nights
Start/Finish: Brive/Toulouse
Time travel isn’t an impossibility – one just needs to know
where to look. The Dordogne Valley is just such a place. Cycling
this region provides us a chance to peel back the layers of
history, prehistory, medieval history and well-established
tradition.
Bulls, horses and reindeer gallop across cave ceilings painted
in Cro-Magnon times. Castles and fortified villages dot the
countryside as evidence of the Hundred Years’ War and Wars of
Religion. Meanwhile, modern life has yet to find this place. But
we have – and that’s just how we like it. Trip Highlights:
- Tour Font-de-Gaume cave for a private lesson in
Cro-Magnon art
- Cycle to Beynac to explore the town’s château, a French
stronghold in the Hundred Years’ War
- We don’t just admire storybook castles from a distance,
we sleep in them – at places like Château de la Treyne, a
14thC castle perched on a cliff overlooking the Dordogne
River
- Bike the road to Rocamadour, one of the most famous
pilgrimage paths in Christendom
- Dine on Michelin-starred cuisine at our own château

Accommodations:
Domaine de Rochebois, Vitrac
This domaine, reminiscent of Tuscany, is a beautiful hotel
with its own golf course. A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the
World, the 19thC property is spectacularly situated amid hilltop
castles and medieval towns. Relax on the terrace and marvel at
the changing light as the sun sets lazily over the valley.
Château de la Treyne, Lacave
Relais & Châteaux
We love Château de la Treyne, the famed castle hotel perched
on a cliff above the Dordogne River. The feeling seems to be
mutual: they named two of the hotel’s 14 rooms “George” and
“Martha” after the Butterfields.
Château du Viguier du Roy, Figeac
The Château du Viguier du Roy is a restored medieval mansion
in the heart of Figeac, offering sumptuous accommodations,
swimming pool, library and an unparalleled sense of history. Our
host, Mme Secordel-Martin, lovingly oversaw the restoration--the
largest private restoration project in France--and proudly bears
the unofficial title of the most gracious host in one of the
most enchanting hotels in France.
