BELIZE WITH THE KIDS:
AGES 8+
Trip Length: 7 days/6 nights
Start/Finish: Belize City/Belize City
In our opinion, there are few places better suited to travel
with kids than Belize – and not just because it’s easy and close
to home. We love it because it keeps kids not just entertained
but awe-struck. Uncovering ancient Mayan ruins beneath jungle
foliage at Caracol, you’ll feel like the star in an Indiana
Jones movie. And it just doesn’t get any better than gearing up
with helmets and lights to go caving.
Minimizing hassles and maximizing the adventure, we focus on two
regions in the country – staying at both of Francis Ford
Coppola’s spectacular luxury lodges. First up is Blancaneaux,
surrounded by the only pine forests in Belize. Then we fly down
to Placencia for three nights on the beach at Turtle Inn.
Trip Highlights:
- Canoe into remote Barton Cave, a Mayan burial site
- Tour the jungle in search of three-toed sloths and
Toucan Sam
- Let the sound of waterfalls guide you to a spectacular
picnic lunch
- Alternate Belizean fare with wood-fired pizzas
(accompanied by FFC’s wines, naturally)
- Indulge in a traditional Thai massage in a thatched-roof
oceanfront pavilion
- Go snorkeling in the Caribbean off Laughing Bird Caye, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site

Accommodations:
Blancaneaux Lodge, Cayo District
In 1981, Francis Ford Coppola stumbled upon and fell in love
with this enchanted retreat in the Mountain Pine Ridge reserve.
Mexican architect Manolo Mestre worked with Coppola on the
expansion of the lodge into a full-scale resort. The villas he
created rise from the jungle on stilts and have soaring hardwood
and hand-woven ceilings. Francis and Eleanor Coppola chose the
furnishings for each villa themselves from Mexico and Guatemala.
The mahogany furniture on the decks and in the restaurant is
handcrafted locally, as was the slate bar carved with ancient
Mayan symbols. Luxurious tiled Japanese baths come with a view
of the jungle sky and local herbal soaps.
Turtle Inn, Placencia
Located just one mile north of the small Creole fishing village
of Placencia on the shores of the longest coral reef in the
Western Hemisphere lies Francis Ford Coppola’s other pride and
joy—the Turtle Inn. Luxury meets leisure in each of the
traditional thatched roof cabañas with hand-carved Balinese
furnishings, private courtyards, spacious Japanese-style
bathrooms, and screened ocean front porches. The hotel's two
bars, two restaurants, freshwater swimming pool, Thai massage
pavilion, and extensive dive shop are sure to keep you busy. Oh,
and don’t forget the homemade gelato.
