                     SLOVENIA WALKING
SLOVENIA WALKING ITINERARY

Trip Length: 7 days/6 nights
Start/Finish: Ljubljana/Venice

Slovenia – somewhere in Europe, right? One of those Eastern Bloc countries. What could it possibly have to offer to a B&R traveller? Surprise! A tremendous amount, as a matter of fact. Niftily tucked between east and west, Mediterranean and Alps, Slovenia shares borders with Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Italy, and shows touches of all their cultures in the fabric of its distinct own. For natural beauty, Slovenia knows no rivals – its Julian Alps rival the Rockies for rugged, pristine peaks. And down in the lowlands, the vineyards are producing wines that have caught the eye of oenophiles in the know.

During our trip, we stay in the country’s two highest regarded properties – one of which was Tito’s summer residence (don’t let that deter you) – as well as a refined Italian country inn. Our walks take us along stunning alpine ridges and through rolling forest and vineyards. And everywhere we go, we’ll meet welcoming local folk such as Barbara, who opens her gostisce (inn) at lunch just for us.

Trip Highlights:

  • Rendezvous in the elegant city of Ljubljana
  • Hike mountain trails in Triglav National Park
  • Learn how to make zlikrofi, a creative variation on tortellini
  • Stay on Lake Bled, its emerald-green waters reflecting the snow-capped mountains
  • Watch as a elderly grandmother makes the delicate and renowned Idrija lace
  • Taste reds and whites from the burgeoning Brda wine district, right on the border with Italy

Accommodations:

Hotel Vila Bled, Bled
Relais & Châteaux
Originally an Austrian prince’s residence, then a Yugoslavian dictator’s summer residence (yes indeed, Tito stayed here, enjoying our view of the lake), Vila Bled sits in the most enviable position in town, with direct views across to the church islet and Bled Castle. The original 1950s East Bloc luxury décor is an interesting curiosity of the hotel, as is the huge fresco depicting Tito and his liberation of the country.

Hotel Kendov Dvorec, Spodnja Idrija
Relais & Châteaux
For 800 years, this was the farming estate of the Kenda family. A decade ago, the Svetlik family bought the ruins, lovingly rebuilt it in the spirit of the original style, and in a nod to history named it in honour of their predecessors. The perfectionism of our hosts is evident in the décor, in the cuisine, and in the service we enjoy here.

Grand Hotel Entourage, Gorizia
The Entourage is the finest hotel in the wine district of eastern Friuli, on the Slovenian border. Its spacious modern rooms are nicely complemented by the historical villa setting, on one of the city’s quietest squares.
