JAPAN BIKING ITINERARY
Trip Length: 8 days/7 nights
Start/Finish: Tokyo/Kyoto In much of Japan, tradition
only presents itself on the periphery. However, once you leave
the cities and get far off the main line of the Shinkansen, the
memories return. Modern Japan can be intoxicating, but like
sake, you won’t really understand its flavours until you have
seen how the rice is grown. Japan isn’t a place that opens up
easily. B&R takes a subtle approach to fitting in – shower
before and after you bathe, bring business cards everywhere,
address people according to age – we stand out, but only for our
great understanding.
Trip Highlights:
- Step off the plane and onto your bike to immediately
begin exploring the picturesque and tranquil Noto Peninsula
- Be educated by masters in centuries’ old traditions:
lacquerware, kimono making, sake brewing, bonsai and tea
ceremony
- Shrine or temple? Shintoism or Buddhism? Be introduced
to ancient and serene sanctuaries that symbolize Japan’s two
major religions
- Hot spring heaven. All of the ryokans (Japanese inns) we
stay in have onsen baths that provide the perfect cure for
tired leg muscles
- Blissful biking on excellent roads through a rural Japan
that few Westerners, or Japanese, will ever witness

Accommodations:
Notonosho Ryokan, Wajima
Since the Noto Peninsula is considered the inaka (countryside),
fancy hotels simply do not exist. Notonosho is a 20-room inn
with a refined feel and is a great introduction to the Japanese
aesthetic. Rooms are spacious and all feature tatami mat floors
and futon beds. Located on the coast just north of Wajima, it
will be the perfect base from which to explore the Noto
Peninsula.
Tadaya Ryokan
Set in the hot spring town of Wakura Onsen, Tadaya perches over
the Sea of Japan and attracts Japanese from all over the country
to bath in its famous hot springs. Enjoy the beautiful sunset
from the window of your spacious room. Tadaya boasts an onsen
with hot spring baths inside, outside and in private tubs.
Excel Hotel Tokyu, Kanazawa
A break from the tatami mats and futons, the Excel is a
comfortable four-star property that offers modern Western-style
rooms (and beds!), and is located within easy walking distance
of the city’s shopping, restaurant and historic districts.
Kayotei Ryokan, Yamanaka
A family-owned traditional inn, the exquisite Kayotei Ryokan
is what all Japanese ryokans should be like. The hospitality is
warm and charming but very unobtrusive. The 10-room inn is set
amidst a natural forest that the owner, Mr. Kamiguchi, has
preserved in its original state. Carefully placed works of art
and antiques add to the feeling of being in someone’s private
home. The simply designed hot spring overlooks the forest and
provides the perfect place for meditation.
Westin Miyako, Kyoto
Ideally located a short walk from many of the main
attractions in Kyoto, the Miyako has recently been renovated and
now once again takes its place as the leading hotel in the city.
Since many travellers will be staying on in Kyoto, travelling to
other areas of Japan or departing for home, the extremely
helpful Miyako staff will readily assist with all arrangements.
Rooms have views over the city and are appointed with the latest
modern facilities.
