                      INDIA BIKING
INDIA BIKING ITINERARY

Trip Length: 9 days/8 nights
Start/Finish: New Delhi/New Delhi (December: Mumbai/Mumbai)

Trip Length:
9 days/8 nights
Start/Finish: New Delhi/New Delhi (December: Mumbai/Mumbai)

It is impossible to describe the colours of Rajasthan. What we can say is this: decide how much film you think you’ll need – then pack five times as much. It’s not just the famed palaces and ancient fortresses that will capture your imagination. It is the scenes of real life that travelling by bike reveals: the roadside markets selling dhurrie rugs and sacks of bright red chili peppers; the country roads where camel trains pass for traffic and men in saffron-coloured turbans herd sheep through villages so off the beaten path that children run up to have their picture taken with you.

Naturally, those country roads guide you to Rajasthan’s finest hotels – colonial gems and maharaja’s palaces whose opulence gives luxury new meaning. Then there’s the 17thC hunting lodge whose simple authenticity makes it the perennial, surprising favourite.

Trip Highlights:

  • Cycle to the edge of the Thar Desert past villages, Hindu temples, and plenty of camels
  • Ride a three-wheeled tuk-tuk through the winding streets of Jodhpur
  • Feast like a maharaja on a pleasure boat cruise
  • Indulge in some serious luxury at the Oberoi Udaivilas

Varanasi Pre-Trip: Exploring Ancient Rituals
It is an understatement to say you will never forget the experience of cruising down the Ganges at sunrise. To visit Varanasi, one of the oldest living cities in the world, is to witness a colourful and chaotic microcosm of all of life’s wonders, hardships and complexities. We believe a trip to India is greatly enhanced by beginning at its religious core and dipping your toe into the daily rhythm of its extraordinary rituals.

Pre-trip Length: 3 days/3 nights
Start/Finish: New Delhi/New Delhi (December: Mumbai/Mumbai)

Accommodations:

Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur
Constructed on the orders of the Maharaja of Jodhpur as a famine relief project, the Umaid Bhawan is a masterpiece set amidst 26 acres of lush gardens on a hillside overlooking Jodhpur. One of the last great palaces to be built in India (and with 347 rooms, once the largest private residence in the world), it was completed just before independence in 1937 and is still home to the Maharaja and his family. Apart from admiring the incredible architecture, you can also visit the Jiva Spa, which offers an unparalleled experience in a perfect environment of lavish comfort and pampering.

Rawla Narlai, Narlai
This former hunting lodge of the Maharaja of Jodhpur is now a delightfully intimate retreat. Comfortable rooms and modern baths blend with the ancient aesthetics of Narlai, while the sound of gentle chanting from the many nearby temples and mosques adds a spiritual element to our stay. Chef Nate Singh prepares meals from secret recipes handed down for generations.

Devi Garh Fort Palace, Delwara
Tucked away in the age-old Aravalli hills of Rajasthan, the 18thC Devi Garh Fort Palace has undergone years of restoration and reconstruction to regain its past glory. An imposing and impressive structure, it is now a boutique hotel with 23 suites and six tents. Each suite is unique: luxurious and beautiful, embellished with marble and semi-precious stones, yet equipped with the most modern of conveniences.

Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur
One of several Oberoi properties that B&R stays at, Udaivilas is the jewel in the crown. Situated on the edge of the lake with views back to the stunning cityscape of Udaipur, it is truly a resort fit for a maharaja, and you’ll feel like one here—expect to be treated as an honoured guest.
