CHINA BIKING ITINERARY
Trip Length: 10 days/9 nights
Start/Finish: Beijing/Shanghai (Fall 07/Spring 08)
We realize it’s a big claim, but this might just be the most
exciting point in China’s history yet. As the most populous
country in the world poises to become the most powerful – with
the 2008 Olympics bearing down and the economy on fire – the
favourite joke among Chinese is that their national bird is the
construction crane.
Of course, China’s exciting future rests on the shoulders of one
of the world’s oldest civilizations – and understanding the
country means seeing not just bustling Beijing, but also
visiting the terra cotta warriors at Xi’an, seeing how ethnic
minorities live, and cycling through agrarian villages past rice
farmers and water buffalo. The way we look at it, you only go to
China once.
Trip Highlights:
- In Beijing, bike from the luxury of the Peninsula Hotel
to Tiananmen Square and Old Beijing
- Eat at former President Jiang Zhemin's favourite
dumpling restaurant
- Walk along a less-visited section of the Great Wall to a
picnic lunch
- View the 6,000 terra cotta warriors guarding Emperor Qin
Shi Huangdi’s tomb in exclusive, B&R-style
- Cycle among karst formations beside the Li River
- Visit a remote Naxi village and walk with a guide
through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Lijiang
- Tour Hong Kong Harbour on a night-time cruise you won’t
soon forget

Accommodations:
The Peninsula Palace, Beijing
Recently refurbished from top to bottom, the Peninsula
Palace was rated China’s top hotel by Travel & Leisure in 2005.
We know why! One block away from Tiananmen Square and the
Forbidden City, its location is fantastic, as are its rooms,
amenities, and buffet breakfast.
Banyan Tree Lijiang
From the moment you open the gate to your private garden
villa, you will sense the magic of Lijiang and the beautifully
designed Banyan Tree. The warm rustic colours and Jade Dragon
Snow Mountain reflected in your personal outdoor jet pool make
your villa the perfect retreat after a glorious day of biking at
the foothills of the Himalayas.
Paradesa Yangshuo Resort, Yangshuo
We’re not sure if this is paradise, but after a long day of
biking and hiking in hot weather, the pool sure feels like it.
We stay in the best wing of the Paradesa, which has rooms that
meet B&R standards. They are well appointed, with marble
showers, and have spectacular views over the karst formations
surrounding the inner town. The hotel’s location on the main
street puts us close to cafés and shops.
Hyatt Regency Xi’an
The Hyatt Regency is the best hotel in Xi’an, boasting
modern amenities and a great downtown location. Our rooms are on
the Regency Club level, which allows us to relax in the private
lounge and enjoy quiet breakfasts and evening drinks.
