                  SOUTH AFRICA BIKING
SOUTH AFRICA BIKING ITINERARY

Trip Length: 10 days/9 nights
Start/Finish: Cape Town/Port Elizabeth

It’s been 10 years since we organized the first B&R trip to South Africa and, if we do say so ourselves, we’ve got it down. We show you the highlights: the glorious Cape and the farmlands of Paarl; the historic vineyards of Franschhoek Valley; seaside nature reserves and the fishing village of Hermanus; and spectacular Kwandwe Game Park – where all the luxury in the world doesn’t diminish the raw excitement of waking to a lion’s roar.

With three days each of biking, walking and game viewing, we’re not afraid of variety. We selected our hotels with the same philosophy in mind – taking you to a Cape Dutch country house, an elegant French hotel, a chic seaside hideaway, and an exquisite private game lodge. (Spending seven nights at Relais & Châteaux properties, you could say this is a trip for hotel lovers.) And with longtime B&R guides who happen to be certified park rangers (that’s “bush guides” around these parts), you’ll be in good hands every step of the way.

Trip Highlights:

  • Cycle through the Cape Point Nature Reserve, watching for antelope, eland and baboons
  • Learn how to keep the rhythm and drum to the beat of Africa
  • Walk and bike through fruit orchards and famed vineyards
  • Sea-kayak alongside dolphins, penguins and – just maybe – a southern right whale
  • Taste local vintages with wine guru André Morgenthal
  • Dine at one of South Africa’s highest-rated restaurants
  • Observe lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and giraffes with a professional tracker

Accommodations:

Vineyard Hotel & Spa, Newlands, Cape Town
With over 200 years of history within its walls, this deluxe 175-room hotel is situated on six acres of attractive landscaped parkland on the banks of the Liesbeeck River. This beautiful establishment comprises the original home of Lady Anne Barnard as well as new bedrooms designed by highly acclaimed architects Jack Barnett and Revel Fox. It is filled with works by leading South African artists. The hotel has two swimming pools, a health and fitness centre, and the Angsana Spa operated by the world-renowned Banyan Tree group.

Le Quartier Français, Franschhoek
Relais & Châteaux
Le Quartier Français is a Victorian residence hidden away in the heart of the Franschoek Valley’s vineyards. Our hosts are owner Susan Huxter and general manager Linda Colthard, whose special touches are seen in everything from the Egyptian cotton bed linens to each room’s creative flare. The Quartier’s restaurant is host to the culinary creations of Margot Janse, one of South Africa’s top chefs.

Mimosa Lodge, Montagu
This 19thC farmhouse is now a charming lodge set in the centre of pretty Montagu, but in its time has served as school boarding house, old age home and brothel. Lovingly converted and restored by chef and owner Bernard Hess, each of the 16 rooms opens onto a Victorian veranda or the extensive gardens; in fact, the kitchen garden will provide much of the produce you will enjoy in the dining room. Other amenities include a well-stocked library, a heated salt-water pool, and a boules pitch that be cause for some pre-dinner competition!

Birkenhead House, Hermanus
The regal Birkenhead House is perched high on the cliffs of Hermanus overlooking the whale watcher’s paradise of Walker Bay. Named after a British troop ship that sank in Walker Bay in 1852, the Birkenhead features opulently appointed suites, many of which offer expansive vistas of Walker Bay. Services include a full spa menu, fully equipped gym and a steam room. World-class cuisine is a matter of course, with lavish meals and seafood delicacies served up daily.
