                        'LE PHENICIEN'
Canal and River Cruising by Abercrombie and Kent

'LE PHENICIEN': PROVENCE, THE CAMARGUE & LANGUEDOC ITINERARY:

SUNDAY
Meet at Le Jardin des Sens in Montpellier to transfer to 'Le Phénicien,' moored in Aigues-Mortes. After a welcome apéritif, explore this 14th century walled city before the first gourmet dinner on board.

MONDAY
Cruise to the Camargue this morning, heading east on the Canal du Rhône à Sète that links the Petit Rhône with the étangs (inland seas) that dot the Mediterranean coast. Moor in the quiet village of Gallician before visiting a prestigious manade (ranch) where local cowboys on superb white horses demonstrate how they tend their herds of bulls.

TUESDAY
An unforgettable cruise on the canal today to the Roman city of Arles, the 'open-air museum' of Provence. Delve deep into antiquity on a guided visit - and unravel the more recent joy and despair of Van Gogh who painted more than 300 canvases during his year-long residence in 1888.

WEDNESDAY
Cruising onto the mighty River Rhône, 'Le Phénicien' passes through the 36-foot-high lock at Beaucaire en route to Vallabrègues, a charming port where a lively game of pétanque awaits. In the afternoon, visit medieval les Baux-de-Provence, dramatically set atop a rocky plateau of the Alpilles.

THURSDAY
After breakfast, cruise to historic Villeneuve-lès-Avignon for a guided excursion to Le Pont du Gard. This masterpiece of Roman engineering is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an informative museum explains the historic significance of the magnificent tri-level aqueduct.

FRIDAY
An early cruise to one of the best cellars of Châteauneuf-du-Pape for a guided visit and tasting. Then, explore Avignon, the walled city of the Popes, learning about the city's religious and artistic importance on a guided tour. A wonderful farewell dinner awaits for our last evening on board the barge.

SATURDAY
After breakfast, transfer to the Grand Hotel in Avignon where your tour ends.

Note: This route is run in reverse on alternate weeks.
