       HIGHLIGHTS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA
Discovery Series by A&K

HIGHLIGHTS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA ITINERARY:

DAY 1: USA or Canada/Cape Town, South Africa
Board your flight to Cape Town.

DAY 2: Cape Town
With Table Mountain serving as a dramatic backdrop to one of the most beautiful harbor cities in the world, Cape Town is the perfect beginning to your South Africa adventure. Your A&K representative meets you at the airport and you are transferred to your luxurious waterfront hotel. Cape Grace

DAY 3: Cape Town
Drive through Cape Town to flat-topped Table Mountain for a panoramic view of both city and sea. Take a refreshing stroll through Company Gardens, a large tranquil park with a lush collection of plant life. Continue to the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest building in South Africa. This five-pointed stone castle was built to protect the Cape amid rumors of war between Britain and the Netherlands. Continue on to the District Six Museum. Originally a vibrant community of freed slaves, District Six was completely destroyed after the South African government declared it a “whites-only” area.
Refusing to let their lives in District Six become part of the rubble, citizens organized a museum to keep the memories of District Six alive. Their efforts paid off in 1998 when the District Six land was granted back to the people. This evening, gather with your fellow travellers for a festive welcome dinner. Cape Grace B D

DAY 4: Cape Town/Franschhoek
Explore the Cape Peninsula and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, home to the rare bontebok. Covering 22,000 acres, the reserve converges at Cape Point, a great pinnacle of rock. Ride the funicular to the top from where you may see southern right
whales in spring and early summer. Visit a colony of endangered African penguin at Boulders Beach before stopping in Kalk Bay for a harborside lunch. Continue to Franschhoek, a prolific wine producing center. Your evening is at leisure. Le Franschhoek Hotel B L

DAY 5: Franschhoek
Explore Stellenbosch on foot as your guide discusses its historic significance and its place in the contemporary wine industry.  Explore in the company of an expert guide whose stories bring this colorful town to life. View areas of great architectural heritage, including examples of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian properties situated among rows of beautiful oak trees. Your walk finishes at the fascinating Village Museum, which chronicles the town’s past and incorporates the oldest existing house, dating back to 1709. Afterward, sample some of the Cape’s award-winning wines at a renowned Stellenbosch wine estate. Your afternoon is at leisure. Le Franschhoek Hotel B L D

DAY 6: Franschhoek/Cape Town/Kruger National Park

Board a morning flight to the world-renowned Kruger National Park via Johannesburg. Enjoy a scenic transfer with game-viewing en route to your luxury lodge on the Lwakahle River in the easily accessible southern portion of Kruger National Park. Kruger is home to the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) and a wide variety of other animals and birds, which roam freely in their natural habitat. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to take part in wildlife viewing activities. Lukimbi Safari Lodge B L D

DAY 7: Kruger National Park

Spend a full day immersed in the drama of life in the bush. Safari drives leave early in the morning and late in the afternoon in open vehicles. Guides are renowned for their extensive knowledge and passion for “their Africa” and love to share their enthusiasm with their A&K guests. Your lodge’s property allows for walking safaris — an exhilarating way to view wildlife at ground level and track game in the bush. Walks are generally taken after breakfast and guests are always accompanied by a skilled ranger. The day is at leisure to enjoy some of the many activities available at your lodge. Lukimbi Safari Lodge B L D

DAY 8: Kruger National Park/Johannesburg

After a morning game drive, depart for Johannesburg. Sandton Sun B

DAY 9: Johannesburg/Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls, “The Smoke that Thunders,” is one of the great natural wonders of the world. View the thundering, crashing waters and the surrounding rainforest, teeming with birdlife, bushbuck and baboon. The falls have also become a center for adventure
sports enthusiasts, who come from around the world to enjoy whitewater rafting in the gorges, bungee jumping from the bridge, game fishing, horse riding, kayaking and flights over the falls. Later, board a flight to Johannesburg and connect to your homebound flight. B
