         HIGHLIGHTS OF JORDAN & EGYPT
Discovery Series with A&K

HIGHLIGHTS OF JORDAN & EGYPT ITINERARY:

DAYS 1-2: USA or Canada/Amman, Jordan
Arrive in Amman where you are met by an A&K Representative and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure to relax after your long journey or to explore this beautiful city, built, like Rome, on seven hills with a history stretching back as far as the Early Bronze Age (3000-1200 BC)  Four Seasons Hotel Amman

DAY 3: Amman/Petra

Today, you travel through countryside rich in Biblical history. From Amman, drive along the scenic King's Highway south over mountains and through the beautiful Gorge of Amman. Visit Bethany Beyond the Jordan, where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist; then proceed to Mount Nebo where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land. Continue to Madaba, the "City of Mosaics," which has the oldest preserved mosaic map of the Holy Land. Drive to the abandoned city of Petra later in the day. This evening enjoy a welcome dinner hosted by Abercrombie & Kent.
Petra Mövenpick Resort B L D

DAY 4: Petra

Spend a full day exploring the "rose-red" city of Petra, sculpted from a mountain range by the Nabataeans in the third century BC. Tonight get an inside glimpse of the secrets behind the famous regional cuisine of the Levant during your Petra Kitchen dinner. Petra Mövenpick Resort B L D

DAY 5: Petra/Amman

Travel back in time to visit Jerash, a third-century city often called the "Pompeii of the Middle East" for its spectacular and well preserved Roman remains.
Four Seasons Hotel Amman B L

DAY 6: Amman/Cairo
Fly to Cairo, the starting point for your journey back to the time of the pharaohs. Later, visit the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, housing the world's greatest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, including the Mummy Room and the treasures that were extracted from Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings.
Cairo Marriott Hotel B L

DAY 7: Cairo

Travel to Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt, and to the legendary city of Menes, named after the Egyptian king credited with founding the First Dynasty. Continue to the necropolis of Sakkara to see the world-famous Step Pyramid of King Zoser. After lunch, travel to the Giza Plateau, site of the Great Pyramids. Cheops' Pyramid, the largest of the three, was built around 2690 BC and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Guarding these ancient masterpieces is the Great Sphinx, the largest monumental statue in the world.  Cairo Marriott Hotel B L

DAY 8: Cairo/Abu Simbel/Aswan

Built during the reign of Ramses II, the Great Temple at Abu Simbel is considered one of the most beautiful in Egypt. The larger temple houses four statues of Ra-Harakhte, Ptah, Amun-Ra and Pharaoh Ramses II himself. The axis of the temple was positioned by the ancient Egyptian architects in such a way that, twice a year, the rays of the sun would penetrate the sanctuary and illuminate the sculpture. Fly to Aswan to board 'Sun Boat IV.' After lunch wander through the granite quarries where the enormous Unfinished Obelisk was discovered. Explore the High Dam, the world's largest rock-filled dam at a length of 1,500 feet. Board a motorboat to the island of Agilika where you explore the majestic Philae Temple.  MS 'Sun Boat IV' B L D

DAY 9: Aswan/Kom Ombo/Edfu/Esna

The temple of Kom Ombo is a double temple, perfectly symmetrical along its main axis. Built at a bend in the Nile where crocodiles once basked in the sun, one side of the temple is dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek. Cruise to Edfu for a visit to the Temple of Horus, the best-preserved temple in Egypt. Tonight's dinner on board is an "Egyptian Night" costume party for all guests with a lavish buffet of Egyptian specialties, followed by music and dance.  MS 'Sun Boat IV' B L D

DAY 10: Esna/Luxor

Journey to the West Bank of Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, a vast city of the dead where resting places for the pharaohs of the New Kingdom were carved into the rocks. Explore the Valley of the Queens and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt's first female pharaoh. After lunch, set out to discover the Karnak Temple, the biggest temple in Egypt, followed by a visit to the Temple of Luxor.  MS 'Sun Boat IV' B L D

DAY 11: Luxor/Cairo

Today you bid farewell to Upper Egypt. Your tour of Islamic Cairo includes a visit to the medieval citadel of Salah El Din, containing the ottoman style alabaster mosque of Mohammed Ali. From here, you enjoy a walking tour from Bab El Fotouh to Khan El Khalili Bazaar. This unique tour takes you from one end of the ancient Khan El-Khalili thoroughfare to the other - the area that was once the heart of the old walled city of Cairo. This evening join your fellow travellers for a special farewell dinner.
